Assignment #5

"I Believe I Can Fly" is a 1996 song by R&B singer R. Kelly. The song was written, produced and performed by R. Kelly. It was featured in the 1996 motion picture Space Jam. It is also the first English song in my life and is always my favorite song. When I was ten years old, I have not yet learned English in my native country. I don’t even know what the song was meaning about; however, I was deeply moved by the melody of this song. The song was filled with an attitude with positive and optimistic which make me feel hopeful about my future. “I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky” was so meaningful for my school life because I always thought nothing is impossible as long as I have paid my effort. This song is just like a belief that always encourages me to face both good and hard time in my life.

I Believe I Can Fly - R. Kelly

I used to think that I could not go on

And life was nothing but an awful song

But now I know the meaning of true love

I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

See I was on the verge of breaking down

Sometimes silence can seem so loud

There are miracles in life I must achieve

But first I know it starts inside of me, oh

If I can see it, then I can be it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

Hey, cuz I believe in me, oh

If I can see it, then I can do it

If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

Hey, if I just spread my wings

I can fly

I can fly

I can fly, hey

If I just spread my wings

I can fly

Fly-eye-eye

  1. Thanks for sharing this memory Wenhui. It is amazing how music can touch us, right? There are lots of songs from other languages I have listened to and been moved even without knowing the lyrics. No wonder this has stayed with you. Not a bad choice even after you know what it meant, right?

  2. That is a nice story. It just goes to show how music transcends language barriers. Its good to have things that keep you positive.
